Separate Ways
In Cambodia, marriage is highly valued, with over 94% of people married by their mid-thirties. Despite this, high rates of intimate partner violence (20% of women experience it) exist alongside a strong ideal of lifelong marriage. Interestingly, women initiate 70% of divorces, possibly linked to findings in other countries where liberalized divorce laws correlate with decreased female suicide and domestic violence rates. This study aims to explore current perceptions and experiences of divorce in Cambodia, particularly concerning legal processes and alternative dispute resolution.
